“You should come to Vienna to see Chris. It’s only 2 hours by train from Bratislava,” said Rick after hearing about my plan to visit Kosice, Slovakia and from there taking a train to Bratislava. It was not a bad idea even though I had literally no time to add another destination to my trip. On the other hand, this was my first trip to Europe, and I wanted to see ‘everything’ and believe that I could see ‘everything,’ I squeezed in Vienna on my last day before taking an early morning flight out from Bratislava to London.
A few memorable things happened in Vienna:
– Overwhelmed by the cold during the night at Sud-Bahnhof. I packed only for the summer.
– An Egyptian masseur tried to hit on me offering free massage and accommodation.
– An Austrian train guard lets me enter a train to sleep for the night after witnessing the Egyptian masseur’ continuing flirtation with me.
– Interrupted each hour by guards checking the train and had to repeat the same thing over and over “your friend told me I could sleep here.”
– My peaceful Viennese night was again disturbed by one Austrian employee who brought beer to my compartment, professed his love for Arnold Schwarzenegger and suggested me to come and stay with him in his parents’ countryside cottage. Being a semi-runaway at the time, I gave it a second thought and contemplated a temporary residence in the countryside of Austria, next to a stranger who loved Arnold Schwarzenegger.
All those troubles and I didn’t remember anything about Vienna. These pictures were taken on another trip three years.
